Adoption FAQs
Adopting a pet is a big decision, and we’re here to help make the process as smooth as possible. Below, you’ll find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about adopting a pet from us.
Adoption Requirements & Policies
Before adopting, please review our adoption requirements and policies. These guidelines ensure a smooth process and help us find the best match for both you and our animals. Thank you for choosing to adopt and giving a deserving animal a happy life.
- Age Requirement: You must be 18 or older to adopt.
- Identification Required: You must provide a government-issued photo ID when you apply.
- Renters’ Approval: If you rent, ensure you have your landlord’s approval and provide proof of a paid pet deposit, if applicable.
- Adoption Limit: You can adopt a maximum of two animals per month as per Virginia law.
- Best Match Basis: We base adoptions on finding the best match for you and the pet.
- Review Adoption Contract: Please review the adoption contract to understand your responsibilities as a new pet owner.
- Veterinarian Confirmation: Provide your veterinarian’s name. We will confirm you’re a client in good standing.
- Meet & Greet: If you’re adopting a dog and have other dogs at home, we strongly encourage you to bring them for a meet and greet.
- Family Interaction: We encourage all household members to interact with the potential new pet before finalizing the adoption.
- Animal Holds: We don’t do animal holds.
- Transport Requirements: Cats and kittens must go home in a secure carrier. Dogs and puppies need a collar and leash or a carrier if appropriate.
- In-Person Adoptions: All adoptions must take place in person. We do not transport animals for adoption.
- Refunds: You can get a full refund if you return a pet within 30 days. After 30 days, we’ll return half the adoption fees.
- Right to Refuse: We reserve the right to refuse adoption to anyone for any reason.
- Foster-to-Adopt: We do not do foster-to-adopt. As mentioned, we’ll always take one of our animals back, and will provide a full refund if it is within 30 days, and a half refund after 30 days.
