Spay and Neuter Program
We provide low-cost spay/neuter service for Nelson County residentโs dogs and cats. This service is offered in collaboration with Lynchburg Humane Societyโs Spay/Neuter Clinic. Surgeries are NOT conducted at the shelter.ย Please visit our Spay/Neuter Program to learn more and submit out Spay Neuter Registration Form.
Guidelines for a Seamless Experience
To ensure a smooth and efficient experience for both you and your pet, please follow the guidelines below carefully. Our commitment is to provide the highest quality care while making the process as straightforward as possible.

Pre-Surgery Instructions
- Do not feed your pet anything after dinner the night before surgery. Providing water is acceptable.
- Dogs: All dogs must wear a collar and be on a leash. Crates will be provided for transportation.
- Cats: Each cat must be in a individual carrier. Please line the carrier with a towel and label it with the owner’s name, phone number, pet’s name, and pet’s description.
- Feral Cats: Each cat must be in its own transfer cage. To learn more about our Trap Neuter and Return program, visit outย TNRย page
Registration, Payment, and Required Information
- Dogs and Cats: Complete theย Spay/Neuter Registrationย form BEFORE scheduling.
- Feral Cats: Completeย TNR Request Formย BEFORE scheduling.
- Payment: Payment MUST be made prior to drop-off. You can pay onlineย here.
- Proof of Rabies Vaccination: A current rabies vaccination is required for dogs and cats. You can either email proof (at least a day in advance) toย [email protected]ย or bring a copy of the paperwork with you.
- Surgical Consent: After you’re scheduled, you’ll receive an email from our Spay Neuter Coordinator with a surgical consent form for each pet. These must be signed and submitted electronically BEFORE drop-off.
Check-In and Drop-Off Protocols
- Dogs:ย Stay in your vehicle until the coordinator is ready for you.
- Cats: Bring your cat (in its carrier) to the picnic table area for check-in.
- Feral Cats: Bring each feral cat (in its transfer cage) to the picnic table area for check-in.
Check-in and Drop-off Time
- Spay/Neuter (Dogs & Cats): Check-in is 7 AM and pick-up is the following day at 12 PM.
- Feral Cats: Check-in is 7 AM and pick-up is the following morning at 7 AM.
Cancellations and Other Protocols
- If you need to cancel, please do soย at least two days in advance.
- Beย punctualย – This will help us to facilitate the smooth operation of our services.
- Surgeries are conducted off-site at low-cost clinics, not at the shelter.
Post Surgery
If you have any issues please call the number on the discharge papers.
